Parents will stay and enjoy a cup of Kimbriki herbal tea and chill in the garden setting while the kids learn how to take their food scraps and make soil. \nThrough fun\, engaging activities and craft\, kids will learn all about the benefits of composting with worms and keeping our food waste out of the red bin. \nOur Composting for Kids workshop covers the following topics: \n\nWhy it’s fun to have a worm farm.\nHow to take care and maintain your compost habitat.\nMeet the famous compost worms that make soil out of our leftover food scraps.\nBe a macro invertebrate detective and discover our good garden bugs and compost critters.\nMake a clay habitat and garden creature to take home.\nDesign your own Compost Recipe sign for your home kitchen.\n\nWear closed in shoes\, hat and sunscreen. \nParents need to stay at the Eco House & Garden for the duration of the workshop. \nOptional: bring your vegetable and fruit food scraps eg banana skins and apple cores to feed the Eco Garden worms.

DESCRIPTION:Visit the HUB at Kimbriki!\nThe HUB houses four not-for-profit organisations: Seniors Toy Repairers\, Bikes4life\, and Boomerang Bags. Their dedicated volunteers help to reduce waste going to landfill through repair and reuse. \nAfter the HUB enjoy a guided walk through the Eco House & Garden\, a light lunch and a bus tour of the whole Kimbriki site. \nThis event is for Northern Beaches residents only. \nTransport (bus optional):\nBus will pick up residents from The Tramshed car park\, 1395A Pittwater Rd\, Narrabeen 9.20am. \nIf driving park at the HUB which is halfway down the hill on the left.

DESCRIPTION:Everything you could possibly want to know about how to successfully run a compost bin and a worm farm. \n\n\nComposting and worm farming are great alternatives to disposing of your food waste in the rubbish bin while creating natural fertiliser for your garden. By recycling food scraps in a compost bin or worm farm you can help reduce organic waste disposed in landfill\, in turn reducing the production of leachate and greenhouse gases from landfills. Compost and worm ‘castings’ are both ideal natural fertiliser for your garden. \n \n\nOur Composting and Worms Workshop covers the following topics: \n\nWhy compost or have a worm farm? Learn why food scraps & garden waste must be taken out of our rubbish bins\nSetting up your compost bin & worm farm\nWhat goes into your compost & worm farms?\nLearn different methods of composting\nMaintaining your compost & worm farm\nHow to use compost\, worm castings & ‘worm juice’ on your garden\nThe vital role of organic matter & humus in your soil\nOutlining the human health problems associated with using synthetic fertilisers on your edible gardens\nAnswers to the most common problems with worm farms\n\nNote for Northern Beaches Residents \nNorthern Beaches residents may be eligible to receive a $90 voucher to put towards purchasing a worm farm or compost bin. Available to residents\, one per household\, if you have not received a free worm farm or compost bin from Northern Beaches Council before*. \n*Northern Beaches Residents attending the entire Composting & Worms workshop: Northern Beaches Council would like to support its residents in recycling food waste at home by giving you a voucher towards buying a worm farm or compost bin. Northern Beaches Council will issue a $90 voucher to Northern Beaches residents who attend a Kimbriki Composting and Worms workshop and who have not had a free worm farm\, compost bin or voucher from Council in the past. One voucher per household (not per person) is issued irrespective of number of workshops attended. The vouchers are issued directly from Council after you have attended the workshop. Please allow up to 3-4 weeks for the voucher to be issued and posted to your residential address. Voucher can be used at New Leaf Nursery in Ingleside or at the Kimbriki Eco House & Garden Eco shop.
