Early Stage 1 Waste Unit of Work
This progressive unit of work introduces Early Stage 1 students to the concept of waste and waste being a verb or action that we are choosing or deciding. With the core focus being on their lunchbox and what is in it and what waste they might be producing every lunchtime and the impact that might have across the whole school.
The lessons are based on a 45-minute session and are linked to many areas of the NSW Curriculum as can be seen in the accompanying ES1 Content Outcomes for KLAs for Lessons 1 to 6 documents.
- Lesson 1: Introduction of Waste & 5Rs: Exploring the 5 Rs and what constitutes waste and where it might end up.
- Lesson 2: Decomposition: Looking at what different lunch box items are made of and whether they can break down.
- Lesson 3: Food Waste: Exploring how to compost food scraps and create soil for the school gardens from waste.
- Lesson 4: Make Your Own Paper: Exploring paper as a material and resource and how to make paper through recycling.
- Lesson 5: What’s in My Lunchbox: Examining lunch box waste materials and creating unifix block graphs of their waste materials
- Lesson 6: Put it in the RIGHT bin: Create methods to encourage the rest of the school to sort their waste at source and reduce the waste that is brought into school in lunchboxes
