On August 2nd, The Beach School at Allambie provided multiple sheltered locations, creating the perfect setting for an informative and eye-opening day for our workshop participants. With two workshops held back-to-back, attendees could choose to join Beginners Composting and Worms in the morning, Advanced Composting in the afternoon, or both!
The first session, presented by Wyld and Abbey, guided participants through the fundamentals of maintaining a compost bin or worm farm. This beginner’s workshop demonstrated how simple and rewarding composting can be once you understand a few key principles. Participants described the session as “very informative,” with “great structure,” and said that “Abbey and Wyld were outstanding, so passionate, knowledgeable and informative. They made everything feel achievable.”

The afternoon session was led by Rachel and Wyld. This advanced workshop took a deep dive into the composition of healthy soil and explored several advanced composting methods, including hot composting, no-dig beds and compost tea. Participants made the most of a break in the rain to get hands-on with soil testing and building a hot compost pile from scratch. They loved how interactive the workshop was, commenting that they could “ask questions and get answers you don’t get from YouTube.” One participant noted, “Wyld and Rachel are very knowledgeable and super passionate.”
Both workshops featured lucky door prizes for a few fortunate participants, thanks to our generous sponsors, Tumbleweed. We always enjoy hosting these workshops at alternate locations, as we know not everyone has the capacity to visit the Eco House and Garden onsite at Kimbriki.
