In all our workshops we begin by defining ECOLOGY.
WHAT IS ECOLOGY?
The word ECOLOGY stems from the Greek language:
ECOS Where I go. Our place of ‘being’. (No matter where you go, there you are!).
LOGOS The meaning we make and the care we take of wherever we ‘be’.
ECO LOGOS I will take care of EVERYWHERE I go = ECOLOGY.
This explanation is at the core of everything we do and teach at the Kimbriki Eco House & Garden. Our hope is that everyone who passes through the Eco House & Garden has an opportunity to be an Ecologist – someone who takes care of everywhere they go.
If we all “took care of everywhere we go”, we would live in a very different world. We don’t need to wait for changes in big business, government, schools etc. We can make small everyday changes to our lives in the actions that we take.
We teach and share our knowledge of ecological living and sustainable communities here at Kimbriki. There are many small, positive changes we can make in our everyday lives that can have a significant impact on our environment that we depend on.
Some examples are:
- Sorting at the source (of waste) – our homes and our workplaces.
- Picking up litter on a daily walk and removing it from the environment even if it isn’t ours.
- We are the source of waste, and we can make choices to determine what waste we produce.
- Recycle as much of the resources we use reducing the extraction of natural resources.
- Choosing to Reuse items instead of Recycle them.
- Grow food locally instead of buying food that has travelled many miles.
- Sharing abundance of harvest with others or swapping for other goods.
- Separate your food scraps and garden waste from your general rubbish and recycle them at home, school or office through worm farming or composting.
- Creating beautiful rich, healthy soils in our composting systems to then use to grow food.
- Taking care of our belongings, not losing them, repairing them, maintaining them to prolong their life etc.
- Taking care of our people that we connect with on a daily basis.
- Taking care of ourselves to live a healthy, vibrant, active life as much as possible.
- Taking care of those who may not have the advantage that we might have.
- Remembering to take our own cup when we grab a daily coffee.
- Remembering to take our own reusable bags to the shops.
- Re-examine our overall consumption of resources such as energy, water and consumables as well as our outputs, such as waste.
What could you be doing if you were taking care of everywhere you go?
