The Kitchen is the heart of every home, and in our Garden
The Heart
When tending to the garden, we always visit The Kitchen. Usually at the end of our day to wash hands and tools, to keep them in good working order.
Positioning was important to be close by as a vital water source for the garden with the garden sink and tap on hand for easy use and prepping. Prepping in a kitchen can often be a real mess, and after spending a day in the garden we can get dirty.
The Kitchen is open to the outdoors to work hand in hand with the gardens surrounds and gives the opportunity to connect with nature.
Reuse of Materials
Our Kitchen utilises reclaimed Kitchen sinks and Timber.
These items were sourced from the Buy Back Centre on site. Maybe you can visit this on your way out and take some treasures home to be reused or repurposed in your garden.
Water Reuse and Recycling
Rainwater is captured from the roof of the Rainbow Shed. This water feeds into the sinks.
Have a look under the sinks! You’ll see a bucket under the outlet pipes. We capture this used water and use to water our gardens and rinse our tools.
Both the water going in and out of our kitchen is captured and recycled in some way. Imagine where you may be able to do this in your garden or home?
An eco-friendly kitchen is one that prioritizes sustainability, energy efficiency, and health. Here are some ways to create a greener kitchen:
- Grow herbs on the windowsill of your kitchen. Eat fresh, reduce costs and waste.
- Reduce food waste by only buying what you need – write a shopping list.
- Buy long-life ingredients in bulk – reduce packaging.
- Invest in a small worm farm or compost bin to recycle food scraps.
- Use biodegradable or “grey water safe” dishwashing products – support our waterways.
Remember, small changes add up over time, and adopting eco-friendly practices in your kitchen benefits both your health and the environment!
