Recently our Eco House and Garden staff ran 2 workshops for the public to learn the basics of Worm Farming and Composting. These workshops took on a new format, based on some feedback that had been received at the usual 3-hour Compost and Worm Farming workshop. Instead of one workshop covering both systems, we ran 2 shorter workshops, one on Composting (Composting 101) and one on Worm Farming (Worm Farming 101).

Worm Farming 101 was held on Friday the 18th of October, on site at the Eco House and Garden. Participants learnt about the importance of keeping food scraps out of landfill and were able to have in-depth discussions about how a worm farm works and how each aspect of worm farm care relates back to the anatomy of a worm. After touring the garden to see all the different types of worm farms in use in the Eco Garden, participants had the opportunity to feed and water a worm farm themselves to consolidate their learning. There really is a worm farm for every situation and participants left feeling confident to undertake their own worm farming endeavours.

Composting 101 was held the next day down at Narrabeen Sports High, where the school’s active compost system of 12 bins was on display. Participants learnt the basics of composting in a beautiful outdoor setting, including how to start, feed, look after and mature a compost system. They were able to apply their learnings towards the end of the session by visiting each of the different bins on site and discussing how it was going and what actions could be taken to improve it.

There was plenty of positive feedback on the workshop, some of which is included below:

  • Liked the hands-on aspect of the workshop
  • Loved all of it – seeing how to create and manage a worm farm
  • Great info and fantastic presenters
  • Very clearly explained and participation was excellent

Many of our composting and worm farm resources can be found on the Kimbriki Resource Hive Organic Waste Management – Kimbriki.
