It has been wonderful to connect with Mark and Carlo from Northern Beaches Coffee Roasters recently. They were on the lookout for a sustainable way to deal with some of their by-products from producing coffee in the local community. We supply a fair amount of hessian coffee sacks for use in the compost bins and worm farms for the schools and childcare centres that we support with our Waste Reduction Support programs and also offer them for sale for a gold coin contribution to our Eco House & Garden Education Centre. So you can imagine how delighted we were to find a local roaster round the corner at Narabang Way, Belrose to supply us.
Northern Beaches Coffee Roasters also produce Coffee Husks known also as Coffee Chaff as a by product โ the dried skin surrounding coffee beans that falls off when exposed to high temperatures and. So we took a few bags and did some investigating as to how these can be put to good use in our community instead of being landfilled. We have come up with an info sheet on how to use it in various places which can include:
- Pet and chook bedding material
- Compost addition โ high in nitrogen
- Sheet mulching for weed suppression
- Natural snail and slug repellant โ sprinkled around your plants
- Roses like a layer around them for moisture retention around the roots
- Growing Carrot seeds in
- Acid loving plants like blueberries, azaleas and camillias for mulching
- Worms love it โ so sprinkle into worm farms and compost bins.
Weโve already shared bags of the coffee chaff with Freshwater Community Garden, Fisher Rd SSP/One Meal Composting system and a few residents.
If you think you can use some hessian sacks or coffee chaff connect with us at the Eco House & Garden or visit them at Unit 12, 20 Narabang Way, Belrose.
