How to safely dispose of Asbestos at Kimbriki?
- Material must be double-bagged or double-wrapped and sealed in heavy duty builders plastic (at least 120 UM per layer).
- Individual packages must be 20kg maximum – enabling you to lift each package from your vehicle and place it in the designated asbestos disposal bin.
- All Asbestos material must be unloaded by hand, no assistance by mechanical equipment or tipping is permitted.
- Customers must unload their own waste.
- No friable Asbestos products are accepted.
This includes fire doors. - Loads are subject to site inspection before disposal.
**Loads of less than 100kg or 10 square metres of asbestos waste may be brought to Kimbriki any time during opening hours.
If you have over 100 kilograms or 10 square metres of asbestos waste from your home to dispose of, and plan to transport it yourself, you must use the disposing of household asbestos form to report this movement of asbestos to the EPA within 24 hours after you have delivered the load. You do not need to report the movement before you have actually transported the asbestos waste.
Complete the Form, if you have over 100 kilograms or 10 square metres of asbestos waste to dispose of, and you are a licensed contractor or one is transporting it for you, the contractor must report the movement of asbestos to the EPA via the Integrated Waste Tracking Solution.
For more information or to confirm which reporting requirement fits your circumstances please see the following page from the NSW EPA website.
What is Asbestos?
Asbestos is a group of naturally-occurring fibrous minerals. Asbestos was used to create cheap, lightweight, and fire-resistant materials for use in:
- building
- manufacturing
- utilities.
- Millions of Australian homes contain asbestos and is common in NSW homes and buildings constructed or renovated before 1990.
Unlicensed Asbestos Removal
It is legal to remove some non-friable asbestos yourself, but NSW Government strongly recommend it is removed by a licensed removalist as there is no safe level of exposure to asbestos. The amount to be removed defines who can remove and dispose of asbestos waste.
- a homeowner can remove less than 10m2 of non-friable asbestos themselves, or
- a tradesperson can remove less than 10m2 of non-friable asbestos on behalf of the homeowner.
Removal of more than 10m2 of non-friable asbestos or ANY amount of friable asbestos requires a licensed asbestos removalist.
